It's free on their end if you have the right plan (most do, you can call & check). This sounds great. HOWEVER - they don't tell you that this does not include roaming charges incurred by the international carrier whose towers/signals you're piggybacking on.

So for example T-Mobile themselves won't charge you if you're in, I dunno, Bulgaria or something, but that Bulgarian carrier will bill T-Mobile for the usage and they pass it on to you. Basically there are normally 2 charges you get hit with for international roaming, T-Mobile only takes care of one of these.

I was traveling internationally some this winter. Beforehand I spent time on the phone with TM customer service interrogating them about this - "So you're saying I won't get charged for ANYTHING when using this internationally? My bill will be the same as usual?" "OH YES, ABSOLUTELY!". I made them say this 10 different ways because I couldn't believe what a great deal that was.

Then on returning to the USA my bill was pretty huge for the reasons outlined above. They were like "Sorry we did not explain this clearly". Yet it would have been the simplest thing in the world to explain. They wound up waiving the charges which I didn't expect, but point being it's not as great as it sounds.
