The role you're describing for yourself is that of the President or controller, not the CEO.
Small companies (fewer than 500 employees) rarely need more than one or two C-level employees. In a larger company, a CEO's job is mostly administrative inside and proselytative outside. In a smaller company, they are responsible for the vision, the direction, the fire. The top-down strategy of "what do we attack next," whereas the CMO determines how best to take that direction from the CEO and run with it.
What you call yourself is really meaningless in a small company, as everyone is probably wearing multiple hats if your management is competent.
