Things are modernizing in the the middle east, but it is a very slow process and there is still a lot of very messed up stuff going on there. Many women in the middle east are simply treated as property.

My point is that is is not "allowed". My other point is that unlike other modern societies, rape is still considered something to hide in the Middle East and not so much (these days) for fear of persecution but more so because of "shame".
I agree that change is a slow process in the Middle East and on some levels it is a hindrance but on others it's actually quite refreshing.

great education system (in places like UAE and Bahrain), great people and an extraordinary, multicultural lifestyle (again, I am talking about UAE and Bahrain).
I only spent a year in Saudi Arabia and I could see how it could be an oppressive place to live although my time there wasn't as bad as I have heard people say it was.
