I've always linked to join pages creatively and I'm extremely glad no sponsors were dumb enough to ban me because their broken system didn't count traffic correctly. Just tell the dude to make sure he gets the right email, he probably thinks he can make a custom join that suits his traffic better than your default and with 160 joins per month on average you can believe that he has tested this previously to know for sure.
