I hated Win8 when I first started using it - since I'm on a Desktop - but there are some tips to make it easier...
1) To start an app, press the Windows key (to get to Metro), type the first few characters of the program name, then press enter. You don't need to click on a search box anywhere, just start typing. For example, press Windows, type "cont", press Enter and you'll open the control panel.
2) You can get a "sort of" start button by right clicking on the Windows icon at the bottom left of the desktop. It doesn't show installed programs (boo) but it does include many features of the old start button.
3) There are keyboard shortcuts for many things which normally need multiple clicks or swipes. For example, Windows-D gets you the desktop, Windows-E opens the file explorer. Alt-Tab cycles through open windows. [These work on earlier versions of 'doze, too.]
