It's all relative.
I don't know what you make, so these are fake numbers. Let's say in 2012 you made $150k. Last year you had a bad year, you made $30k. With your prior $150k lifestyle, $30k doesn't get you very far and most likely puts you in debt. Meanwhile, plenty of people would be quite happy with your $30k.
Tell the wrong person you "only" made $30k in XYZ year and you'll have a new person that thinks you're a dick.
