yeah really sounds like sleep apnea. Its not only caused from being overweight, i have it pretty bad and still had it when i was lean and running marathons and shit.. Helps with a lot of things, good sleep starts a snowball effect of good health trust me..
harmon a lot of our genetics passed down are habit forming things, including things like stress and eating habits. We tend to eat the same things we ate often as a kid when we are older whether they are good or bad for us so look into that a bit.
specifically adding things to your diet such as nuts and seeds (as well as a good dose of vegetables) can really have a direct impact on staving off these conditions. ie sunflower seeds have lots of vitamin e and magnesium and help keep tissues more elastic. Its not a cure.. but every % helps right? Keep the inflammation down and you are giving yourself a good chance to avoid these family health issues.
