You're right, shitty writer is an exaggeration. I find that his books start out interesting, they continue to be good to almost halfway through the story, then really bomb at the end. I've read many, many of his books (I used to enjoy them when I was younger), I even read his On Writing. My favorite has always been Dolores Claiborne. Funny that it's one of his few non horror stories.

So? Dan Brown sells record breaking numbers and his books are truly horrible. When it comes to sales of books - even more than moves - numbers mean absolutely nothing. People are especially lazy when it comes to choosing what to read.
