The problem with a Stephen King or an Anne Rice or a John Grisham or any "mega" writer is they crank out volume after volume, page after page, this non-stop stream of verbiage that the writing almost HAS to be 'slick' just so you can get through all those words. If you get into one of these writers be prepared to read like 50+ novels. Wasn't Tommyknockers or The Stand like 1000+ pages?
