Stephen King is a mediocre writer. He's written a couple good books, a handful of terrible ones, and the rest are mostly average. He got lucky early on when one of his books got adapted into a very popular movie and his popularity snowballed from there. Basically he was in the right place at the right time.
Popularity doesn't equal good. Why is it that crappy movies made by hacks (Like Michael Bay, for instance) that make a lot of money are bashed but books written by hacks are assumed to be amazing just because the author is popular?
