That much than I know Russians, it really can't be explained. There is not enough words.
When you put in Russian, former Soviet Union and it's suppression towards citizens, "liberation" (breakdown of Soviet Union), poverty, getting rich and fast, getting west influences, getting new Russian nationality and pride, having Putin... mix this well, and you have something very bizarre. Not the kind of cocktail I would like to drink.
