Although not in name, the insurgency group that became ISIS have been discussed by academics since at least 2009.

This is not new, ISIL / ISIS are what have replaced Al Queda in Syria and Iraq, through bloody infighting amongst factions of Al Queda splinter groups and other insurgents.
So saying nobody ever heard of this before a couple of months ago is ludicrous, you should read more.
