I do not think plywood is rigid enough in this case. Maybe Fiber Board.
Machined aluminum (jacketed for heating/cooling exchanger purposes) would be a light-weight alternative material.
Hardware, lots of spacers or washers, maybe a ball bearing assembly or 4, are going to be the key otherwise.
