You're not supposed to bust your ass to death just to live, that's NOT the goal. You're supposed to be able to work 40hours a week and make a living wage without "busting your ass" to death. Sleeping in your car and dying = busting your ass to death.
Busting your ass brings EXTRA, not just basics. If you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage, you can't afford your business.
