As an outsider I find this rather odd.

On one hand I do not understand why a country would want to be dominated and controlled by another country. Then again, why break up something that has worked well for hundreds of years?

There is a similar issue being debated in California right now - Northern California wants to split from Southern California, creating five separate states. The idea behind this is everyone is tired of being controlled by Sacramento, which is far from the majority of the population of Southern California, yet isn't really part of Northern California. This sounds like a good idea until Northern California figures out the vast majority of it's tax dollars comes Southern California. They are going to gain control (that is not needed) and loose a lot of money (that is needed badly). Just doesn't make much sense to me.
