Putin went through all this trouble to keep a military base in a country he already had friendly relations with and now looks weak because he couldn't finish the job. Added to this he has now pushed that former ally into the hands of NATO.
Then there was the whole Nazi thing and trying to label Ukraine as them and as facist, which only made Russians look like a bunch of idiots to the rest of the world.

Its OK Europe economy will suffer as well due to this sanctions. Euro currency will drop even more by year end, since most people,investors will switch and stick with USD dollar for now.
Putin doesn't take orders from anybody, he have his own opinion and know whats best for the country that's why most people support him.
Ukraine was calling "terrorists" everyone in Pro-Russian cities so Nazi thing is there no big news.
