Bottom line is that when you deal with something like this from real history, you have to limit how graphic you are because the reality is too ugly for the average viewer.

I think you're wrong. If average viewer cannot handle it...don't look.
When I saw the muzzle mask given to house servants bringing food from the kitchen...it was jolting. I read about it, imagined it, and thought, "gee, that sucked". Seeing the actor portraying the slave in a muzzle mask....that was jolting to a whole new level.
I'd like to see the exhibition.
