my parents spoil me rotten and it's a challenge to even treat them to a dinner. They live pretty well on their pensions so they don't need any financial support. I don't like nursing homes though, so if and when either become unable to care for themselves they'll live with me and my partner and we'll pay for in-home care.

We do support my partner's mom, she's only 67 but she has Alzheimer's. We discovered that last year when her husband of 22 years offed himself, leaving a pile of debt to accompany the anguish. She found his body and her doc can't say which elements of her retreat from reality are caused by her physical impairment and which are psychological in nature.

My partner and I and his bro pay for her care and will ensure she never wants for anything. We split all costs and she lives with my brother in law but visits us frequently when he needs a break. I adore the woman and while I have the occasional twinge of resentment at how much we spend each month caring for her, ultimately I feel pretty privileged in being able to do so.
