I made the switch to Mac in 2006. First Mac was a piece of shit PowerBook. It had kernel crashes on a daily basis. Usually multiple times a day.
2nd Mac was a Mac Pro tower. It worked quite well but very loud and cranked out a lot of heat.
First Mac Book Pro I had died after about 2.5 years (motherboard issue).
2nd MacBook Pro 17" still works. Occasional issues where the screen won't turn back on after waking up. Crashes once every few months.
3rd Macbook Pro is my work one my company gave me. It works great. No issues. Hasn't crashed once yet. Been using it daily for about 6 months now.
I also have a gaming system I converted to a Hackintosh. It works great for rendering photos in Aperture. The high end GPU works great for processing RAW photos. It's so much faster than my laptop. Alas, I only use it when I need the horsepower as I'm sure it's sucking up 600-800 watts when it is cranking on stuff. Occasional random reboots but I think it was because I had the memory overclocked. I underclocked it and haven't seen a crash since. Recording audio didn't work because the fan noise in the background was just too damn loud.
Also, purchased the iMac 5k because I wanted something quieter that used less power. Also, screen real estate is crucial for me. I can never get enough. I'm loving it so far. It's great for coding and graphic design because you need so many windows open at once. I run it at the native 5120x2880. Too small for most people but I have really good eye sight. 180 lines of code on the screen vertically.
