I'm having trouble wrapping my head around what the plusses of SSL are. I get that Google might prefer it. Does Google prefer a more pricey one to a free one?

Proper SSL is not a waste of $400 by any stretch. The expensive ones give better stuff, like actual company verification, the whole "Company Name" in the green bar in Chrome, and also insurance and all that good stuff.
