I have never spent more than $100 on any gift for a woman, girlfriend or wife.
I have never dated a woman who was unhappy with that, either. I never got into relationships with women who though that material goods indicated love. I have always gone for the smart, responsible, practical types.
If I were going to buy jewelry with precious or semi-precious stones in it, I would at least buy something that would retain some of it's value. Diamonds are worth very, very little (monetarily) once you walk out of the store.
