I have a guess why. People don't like to think about dying, and never did. They don't want to think that there is an actual end, so they look for something infinite, forever. So way back when, the idea of an afterlife where you lived forever was born from various peoples around the world, and that seed grew into the various religious we have today. Just a guess of course but it works for me, for now.
However, if you're a man of faith, don't despair. Pope Francis has been saying some pretty cool things lately :
