I lived in cheshunt until 18 months ago, which is only 20 minutes from harlow, though right on the edge of the M25 next to Enfield, which is the northernmost London borough. Cheshunt has some nice places, but even the shittier areas you are looking at $2200 a month ($2500 a month when you add in council tax) for a very small basic 3 bed house.
To buy a 1 bed tiny house there was $272,000 last time I looked, in 2008. Skip 5 minutes over the M25 into Enfield, and you can add $20k right there.
