Russia never stopped the Cold War and Cold War thinking. Yeltisin came very very close to losing the re-election to the leader of the Communist Party. After that, they simply neutralized Zhirinovsky by finding a way to bar him from the election (false claims on statements of assets and properties), which every single other bureaucrat lied about as well.
Russia only briefly pretended to from 1994 to the early 2000s that the Cold war was over - when the nation was fully bankrupt and begging the international community (Namely, the West) for money in spite of not even having so much as a basic economic plan. Incidentally, my house cleaner for a while was also the maid of Gaidar, who was one of the principle authors of their economic plan they hastily drafted to satisfy the world bank to secure loans to support the government. She used to tell me how wonderful Stalin was. I miss those very fascinating conversations.
Anyway, smash cut to souring oil prices, Russia repaying foreign loans, having a budget surplus and vetoing ANYTHING put before the UN Security Council and Russia is fully acting again like the Soviet Union.
Someone supporting Russia can say anything they want... there is a simple question... why are NATO countries a threat to Russia? Is Russia planning a nuclear war? There is no real threat to Russia, there is just a bunch of government bureaucrats bemoaning the loss of empire and pining for days when they falsely believed the world ever respected them at all. Russia and Russians have a very twisted view of how the world see's them. It is a nation of generations of people being told how perfect their society is,... that they have no crime, being told how great their socialist and eventually communist future will be, how the peasants and workers will run the world.. every Russian thinks the world knows who Pushkin is, who every famous artist is, who every famous dancer is, when they really have no idea at all and don't care. It's a very odd but very interesting culture of delusion and denial.
Just 20 years ago, they were still calling Moscow "the capital of the world".
