Formal study helps teach you how to be creative - how to think out of the box. Psychology studies in sensation and perception, implied motion...all help. You can have all the passion in the world - yet still turn out mediocre images. Formal training helps you think in ways outside the normal.

Good photos come from the skill and experience of the photographer...a photographer who knows the capabilities of his equipment and how to make the most of it.

The best photos come from taking risks and shooting in sometimes dangerous places most people won't try. I know - been doing it for decades and getting shots what other more timid photographers wouldn't attempt.

Look at my avatar shot. A buddy and I rapelled down in total darkness to the bottom of a frozen gorge at night to light-paint a frozen waterfall with several 1MCP porta-sun spotlights. Every step we took was treacherous (even with boot cleats), it was cold and misty from the water spray. But we caught images the average person wouldn't dare try.
