Any sane person understands the gravity of the situation and hires an attorney. Donny likely thinks he's much smarter than any attorney and Is likely convinced of his own innocence noatter how guilty he is.

A clue to that fact in this forum was how he'd pop in to start a religious discussion making it clear that he just wanted to "explore the topic" and "understand others view points" (Bait people in)... The he's turn very haughty and arrogant and start reminding people that he had over 15,000 books on Christianity or some shit, how much he knows, how much he's studioed, what his qualifications are to debate the topic (implying no one else is qualified to even have an opinion) and so on, doing everything he could to disqualify the opinions of others. That's when I started thinking "oh, he's a bit of a megalomaniac and really he just needs to be heard, he doesn't care about others opinions and his primary intent seems to be to reinforce his own intellectual superiority over others"

It's amusing that people like Baddog would rush to defend someone who is so clealry and obviously flawed in their behavior to the point that even the casual observer can see that he is deeply troubled... but then again most standard forms of "crazy" come with a powerful ability to routinely manipulate and deceive others. The truth is hat more often than not, they simply exploit our own tendecy to rationalize their behavior.
I'm not so sure Baddog is defending him so much as he is saying we might want to wait to tie Donny to a stake and burn him until all the facts are out and he has had his day in court.
