I'm of the opinion that is was an inside job. Not an over the net hack.
I think that a private contractor or even a sony employee is responsible. They might very well work for the GOP or whatever...or even take work from Fat boy in North Korea, but I think the hack was an inside job.
The best hacks are always physical and done with someone who is on location.
Unless of course Sony actually keeps all their private info on public servers, but i highly doubt it. Even small time operations know to have their critical info off the network.
