When I started vaping a little over a year ago, I went the same route as most and insisted on a tobacco-flavor. I wasn't keen on the fruity/dessert flavors at the time...I wanted something similiar to the cig taste.
It took me a few months but gradually I tried out a few different flavors - and eventually found an all-day juice that tasted like the swedish berry candies. It wasn't overbearing or too sweet...just a touch of flavor and it was a nice change compared to the tobacco (I was vaping black honey tobacco at the time).
All this to suggest - don't rule out the fruit flavors too quickly. Fortunately several of our local bricks 'n mortar stores offer taste-testing before buying...so I was able to try out a big assortment beforehand.
And if possible, do taste-testing at the nicotine level you're using. I'm at 18mg...the same level I started...it's just right for me. But I've noticed that trying different flavors with zero nicotine is useless since the nic hit in the throat gives a different taste experience.
