I'm with you. I am pretty liberal when it comes to celebrations. Its a great way to understand people coming from traditions different than my own.
Here in Japan, Christmas season has been pretty nice. Lots of trees, santa claus guys, food, parties... They are not sucked in by the source but in the celebration. Last night we had a party; whiskey, vodka and juice, smoked salmon, beef, pork, chicken, pussy, crab croqettes, more pussy, movies, music...
New Years is the big day. That will be a blowout.
Another new thing for me is "Buonankai" parties. Means, "forget the year." People save up a little for these things cause there can be a lot of them depending on how "connected" you are...It's a way to savor the past year, good and bad, and get ready for the next. There will be parties going on til middle of January that are specific to New Years. I can totally dig it.
