I think that Big Pharma had a LOT to do with making sure that pot wasn't legal.
I think that the liquor companies probably didn't want it either.
And they all have big budgets for lobbyist's to fill politician's pockets to make sure of that.
If you think about it for a minute...it's good business for them to do everything in their power to keep any drug that they can't control distribution of off the market.
Cocaine? Oh hell no. Use this Ritalin and/or a dozen or so prescription speed (weight loss/speed) pills instead.
Heroin? No way! Take these oxy, vicodin, loratab, percosets, etc. instead.
Pot? Fuck no! We have prescription pills to alleviate the nausea from chemo and other prescription pills to help you with your loss of appetite while undergoing radiation therapy.
It's business 101.
