That happened about 10 minutes drive from me. It's not a trashy neighborhood; quiet, working class.

We do seem to take up more than our fair share of column inches in news of the weird and creepy.

The guy was mentally ill to begin with; schizophrenic. In all probability, his meds were off. Wild guess: the intake officers said, "Smile for the camera." They like to poke the caged animal.

It is tragic. On the other hand, someone like this ought to have been living in some sort of assisted care facility. But it's hard to get into one that's more than a warehouse for crazies. The state slashed its budget for mental healthcare two governors ago, and many such facilities closed their doors. Homeless rates quadrupled overnight.

Tragic on all ends.
