A police officer pleads for mercy on the pavement in Paris before being shot in the head by masked gunmen.

Stephane Charbonnier, known by his pen name Charb, was editor of Charlie Hebdo, and gunned down by men with assault weapons.

Mr Charbonnier was named as one of nine men the extreme Islamist group were targetting. Their photographs were printed alongside the caption 'a bullet a day keeps the infidel away'.
