If you want to tone and burn some fat it is a nice way to get back to the gym as it doesn't take long.

There is no defined system for "Cross fit". There is no defined program. There are no defined goals and objectives. It is each gym, doing 100% its own thing and making shit up as they go and trying to be cool and interesting and different (i.e. dangerous). There is nothing that you will do in a cross fit gym that can't be done anywhere else. Light weight. High reps. Low rest period. And plyometrics. There is nothing special happening. As always, all the "new stuff" is the "old stuff", repackaged.
Maybe a guy training people in his gym or your place, really has his shit together. I'm sure many do. However, I am equally sure that the vast majority do not. I've been in that biz for a long time. What I see in almost any place i've been in, is thoroughly appalling.
