Two reasons I never have, or will, use that term in regards to race/culture relations:
1) I HATE salad, just hate it. I'm not a rabbit
2) Salad bowl brings to mind tossing salad,
Melting pot is best. I think of cheese when I hear melting pot. I like cheese, melted cheese, of all types. yumm
Melting pot is not just becoming like "white" people, it's also "white" people becoming part of everything else, it goes both ways
