A very large precentage of my school back then rode bikes or walked to school. It was normal and not a single kid at my school was ever hit by a car or kidnapped.
This is why kids go up today not being capable of making good decisions or have behavuear problems, because parents today are over protective.

At 10 years old I was getting paid 1.00 per younger child who I picked up along the way to school. School was probably 15 blocks from my house.
I did get flashed twice - same dude. Even at that young age I could spot a pervert a mile away. I have so much more street smarts than my kids ever will, because I was allowed to roam free, they never have been.
