It's very beneficial on the drag strip that the torque is instantly applied. This allows the electric-powered cars to be "fully torqued" the moment the pedal is pressed. The combustion engines, on the other hand, have specific (usually narrow) ranges of RPMs and gearing that lead to good torque. It's a losing battle over short courses.
