It's all about making sure the punishment goes on forever, regardless of the fact that any simpleton can grasp: that people can and do change every single day, especially from your mid to late teens > grown adult with the life experience that goes with it. Some of the shit I did as a 16 - 20 year old I've no idea what must have been going through my mind to even think that was ok, but I (like millions and millions of others, so not saying I'm anything special here, far from it) changed for the far better.
