In the U.S., we have the middle and south as the "places you don't want to go". Generally, if you aren't on a coast (and north of North Carolina if that coast it the eastern one), it pretty much sucks.

I looked up Russia and Asia from space -- North Korea was obviously dark, and Russia's population density definitely looks concentrated around Moscow.
