There are options like talking some sense, and then there is self defence and defending others. That gun thing is totally irrelevant; you can't or at least shouldn't act based on "What if he has a gun?". Well, what if he has a nuke, or death ray? That is endless ifs.
There was even that police or guard, that should have done her work.
And I am not that big hearted; I just don't like self served justice. Even the biggest assholes often think that they are justified to do that and that. There is a line to be drawn, and it has already been done. Move the line if necessary; that is how civilized societies work.
