but yes your right some of the people that came over were looking for freedom to be puritan, such as the pilgrims. others came over looking to find things to trade. the first colonial millionaires sold tobacco to europe. george washington was born rich, to a tobacco family. most of the founding fathers were the one-percenters of their time.
so its not correct to say the founders were religious nuts, they were truly enlightened when your think about the effect of the church on the state today.
