The brother and girl are there to serve as wedge issues. He has to have something guilting him into not becoming what he eventually becomes to create tension. If he had no reason not to become saul, becoming saul would be instantaneous and unimportant.

Exactly right. That's the problem with prequels or sequels. People try to compare too much to the other show. This show is building up nicely I feel. Seeming the tormented tug and pull on Jimmy to be Jimmy or Saul. To see how Mike becomes part of the team. We got a little tease with Tuco and company, but once he start to dabble more in that side, it will bring the suspense levels up too, as the risk and situations unfold.
Breaking Bad had a great premise and intriguing, but still was a bit slow building up the story as well. But with the prequel, you know the character, so you want instant reward of how you know him.
