As for animals, I think domestic animals are different to wild. Looks at how deer drink. They are able to drink for minutes. From what i see in documentaries also canine animals are able to drink a lot. Plus you have to consider whether the mammal has passive / active regulation.
My whole point with this is that having ability to choose WHEN we drink makes us forget the natural instincts once we had.

In the wild, drinking the amount they need until their next possible drink, with some animals going for days without water :2 cent:
Let's not forget, it also matters whether you're using the water in the body. So working out for 2 or 3 hours as a builder or sitting editing a movie, would difference in pints per sitting.
After an hour shoot, sweating, hot lights, losing body moisture, it's easy to drink a litre or so of water
