If you are a fan of CBS Tuesday nights and watch "Person of Interest" you see some of this as well as other things that 98% of the population would never believe were true. Those of us in the know understand how realistic/true to life it actually is. In the program itself they do a certain amount of leading and make you do a little guessing but it is more a docu-drama then a straight drama/action based program.
Art almost always imitates life, this includes most fiction.
A great deal of our modern microprocessor controlled electronic devices are back doored and does phone home a report periodically. Forensics has become much easier recently.
