Male prostitutes are great? Well, I can't speak for US, but around here that is neither very desirable profession.

Also, women and men are different regarding sex to begin with. Women have to be careful who to sleep with, men not so much. It is "hardwired" due to biological realities. Women also usually require somewhat different frames for the sex. Being prostitute doesn't quite fit into those frames; those include for example feeling about being safe.

Society does look somewhat down to prostitutes, although not that much anymore, at least around here. The "non-desired" part comes mostly from other things, especially as not that many know your profession to begin with.
