English is not the offical language of the U.S. it's spoken by the majority of the people here but it's not the offical language because we have none. FL the state you live in, was colonized by Spain (ie Spanish speakers). The only reason English is the main language spoken in the US, is because the original 13 colonies spoke English and as such the govt delt in English.
However once we started expanding past those 13 colonies, we started accepting states in which English was not always the primary language. Due to this there is no "offical" language and it's also reason why Spanish isnt completely legitiment as English in this country. Much the same as French in states like LA.
