My town has a reserve cop who is 68 years old. He has been a reserve for about 15 years and started doing it after he retired from his previous job. These days he helps out around the office and does some general stuff for them, but he no longer carries a gun and doesn't go out with the officers. He just enjoys doing it, but knows he is not fit to go out and potentially get in a life and death situation.
It sounds like this guy should have done the same thing.
