I used to have a lot of difficulty falling asleep, mind racing, noises distracting me, etc. until I learned a weird mind trick: I try to dream. It's like visualization, except instead of trying to paint a clear picture with things making sense or a plot or conclusions of some kind, you do the opposite. Think of random nonsense on purpose and don't allow yourself to focus on one thing long enough to think about its meaning.
You might start off with something palpable, like a chimp on a tricycle, but then one of the wheel spokes is a sword. It's held by a musketeer with a red plume in his hat. The plume is then on a weird bird you don't recognize, like a muppet or something. Keep going and within minutes the dream gets more abstract. Don't let any of the thoughts associate to anything that's actually going on in the world or your life.
It didn't take much practice before I was able to fall dead asleep within 10 or 15 minutes. Give it a try.
