You cleared the thing that was already clear to me
My point was that saying such phrases is NOT strange:
His lineage (THEY)
are morons, that family (THEY)
are morons, this bunch of people (THEY)
are morons, etc etc.
All those phrases sound absolutely natural, and no second guessing about using "is" instead of "are". You use "are" because you say THEY (his lineage) ARE.
