She did do the right thing in the moment. Here is where I am coming from. When I was 16 if the town I grew up in sudden erupted in violence and people were rioting and looting I would have never thought about putting on a mask and joining them. I would have stayed home and tried to bunker up the house to stay safe. Also, as she hits him and screams at him and grabs him all he does is pulls away and try to ignore her. Maybe he is just trying to get out of that situation, but to me it screams of a lack of respect for his mom.
I'm probably reading too much into this, but I have a feeling there is more to all this than meets the eye.
