Death cases have plenty of time in court, but you are correct in that most cases don. There is a great documentary called Gideon's Army which is about three public defenders in Georgia. They are all grossly overworked and underpaid. Their boss at one point describes the system as no longer being about finding justice, it is about getting convictions and it is now designed to get as many people to plead guilty as possible in order to pad numbers, save time and save money.
